Tuesday Cinema Club: 2D Thor: The Dark World

The cinema club was split this week between Philomena and Thor. In the end I was the only one who wanted to see Thor so I left the others to Philomena and headed off on my own to see the better cinema experience movie.

Philomena I was told was a good movie but I’m sure I will enjoy it just as much on DVD whereas action movies are often better experienced on the big screen.

Going to the cinema on your own is a strange experience. Walking into the packed screen with the trailers still running and searching for my lone seat at the end of the row filled with people was an unnerving experience. The only way it could have spelled someone watching on their own more was if there was a glowing beam of light highlighting the seat. I’m sure the staring and whispers as I took my seat were all just in my imagination (I hope).

The film was quite good but by no means amazing. I always enjoy watching London in movies, although I don’t always recognise it. I have never been to London when there have been no traffic jams on the roads, when the footpaths are empty; not to mention having a guaranteed parking spot outside wherever you are going without having the need to take out a mortgage to cover the parking costs! Oh the power of the movies!

Not being familiar with the Marvel comics I have no idea how closely the movies relate to the original ideas they are based upon but you don’t need to know to enjoy the movie.

I find the fight scenes in these CGI movies are all becoming a bit samey. The concept of aliens in various guises coming down to reek havoc and take over our world is appearing so often in movies that I’m always surprised they can find a slightly new angle to portray.

They always seem to pick a major town to take over. I would image that in order to begin taking over a world if you started with the remote places where no one will find you it would be easier to begin your world domination plans.

Rather than pulling up in the middle of London where your alien space rocket kind of stands out a bit and there is a certain amount of military presence at any one time. Just a thought for future movie producers.

I’m not sure there is the need for another standalone Thor movie as the concept has been done twice now.

Having a look on Marvel.com it appears we are in for an influx of Marvel movies over the next couple of years:-

  • Captain America: The Winter Soldier – April 2014
  • Guardians of the Galaxy – August 2014
  • Avengers: Age of Ultron – May 2015
  • Ant Man – November 2015

I don’t mind action hero movies, I quite like the concept of people hidden among us with special powers who will help save the world when the aliens attack. It appeals to my active imagination, I just wish the fight scenes and scripts were a bit more original at times.
